The Other Side of Going Green
There's a huge push now, in almost Stop and think for just a moment. How There's a huge push now, in almost every industry, to be Green. Being Green means that you are more concerned about out-of-control power usage, bulging landfi lls, and alternative sources of energy so we don't have to depend on other countries for the gas to drive our cars to work. They are all noble goals and we should do our best to do every little thing we can. One smart thing that often gets overlooked is waste. Think of how many times one of your customers has said, "We're going to upgrade the accounting department, so we're getting all new systems.? Or a customer has said, "These systems are all old, so we fi nally got the money to upgrade.? Do they know that you might buy those systems from them or dispose of them at little, or no, cost? "In the last 20 years, World Data has refurbished and kept about two million pieces of computer equipment out of the landfills and in productive use.? Stop and think for just a moment. How much good life is left in those systems? Why let a good computer, that would work perfectly for word processing and email, go to the dump? Why not do the ecologically right thing and make some money at the same time? You have many customers who would love to pay you for those refurbished, still-working-well systems, rather than go and buy all new ones that don't really give them any advantages-just how fast can you type a letter anyway? There are even customers out there who pay someone else to come and cart their old systems away so they don't have to bother with them. The headline "Throwing Away Elephants? is to help you picture exactly what you (and your customers) are tossing on a regular basis. So, how much does the average elephant weigh? Ten thousand pounds. How many elephants do you send to the trash heap every year? For the sake of illustration, here are a few numbers from actual shipments and business from World Data Products (www.wdpi.com), provided by Darren Selberg, Marketing Manager. According to Selberg, "In the last 20 years, World Data has refurbished and kept about two million pieces of computer equipment out of the landfi lls and in productive use.? In case you don't have your calculator handy, that totals about 25 million 600 thousand pounds. Or, if it had been elephants, they have saved two thousand fi ve hundred and sixty elephants-2,560. That's a lot of elephants for circus parades! And a lot of this equipment came from Fortune 1,000 companies, not just the auto body shop down the street. World Data specializes in equipment that customers use every day; IBM, HP, Cisco, Sun, etc. Once they get it and go over it with a fi ne-toothed comb, they turn around and sell a lot of it right back to other Fortune 1,000 companies. That's a huge herd of elephants, and a lot of wasted equipment. Which one is cheaper for you and your customer? A brand new item bought at wholesale, or a refurbished one in which you have perhaps 30 minutes of tech time invested? Buying a refurbished server is a whole lot cheaper than buying a new one; and that simply means more profi t for you! Continued on page 58 June 2008 | PowerSourceOnline.com 49
