To Drink Or
Not To Drink
BY RICHARD SPENDIFF It is the height of Summer and a small, grateful bird is happily drinking water from the thoughtfully placed bowl in your garden. Your beloved dog is lying contented in the shade af ter gratefully lapping water from his very own monogrammed designer bowl. You are comfortably ensconced in your new garden recliner, watching the happy scene, paper in one hand and a delicious ice cold soda in the other. The temperature is climbing to a toasty 100 degrees. You decide it is getting a mite too warm for your liking! Your tee shirt is feeling damp and uncomfortable. Darn it- time to go in to the AC. Putting the empty glass and paper down, you heave yourself out of the recliner. What is going on? You feel light headed; the back of your neck is stiffening and your head starts to ache. You steady yourself using the back of the recliner. Now you feel clammy and give a little shiver, the sweat on your tee shirt feels cold against your back.. 'Wow, what is going on?' you think. The bird cocks his head on one side and gives you a quizzical look. The dog comes over and gives you a nudge. 'Yup, I know' you say, 'Been outside too long'. The two of you go in to the living room, dog leading the way, master taking a little longer. You reach for another recliner but what is this- an over whelming thirst comes over you. You inform the now stretched out pooch, 'time for that ice cold beer!' You stagger to the kitchen. You are such a decent guy, you thoughtfully notice your pet's indoor bowl is empty and refill it with nice cool water. Now for that beer! Oh dear! You are in the dangerous stages of dehydration. It would be better for you to have drunk from the bird bath or the pooches monogrammed bowl than down that soda and the beer because you are soon to become a hospital statistic. When you are lying on your hospital bed attached to a saline drip and the nurse won't let your pooch in to visit, you can pass the time reflecting on the errors. The early warnings you ignored! The dark, hot urine should have been a pale straw color and cool. The filtered water was boring but now seems a good idea. Our friend was lucky, imagine if he had been doing active work and following the same path. Over the last thirty years, I have coached and trained all types of athletes in various climates and seasons. The method to prevent dehydration is always the same. Before any strenuous activity 'tank up' about thirty to sixty minutes before you start. I find one ounce of water to ten pounds body weight is a good guide. Then 'top up' every fifteen 3 to twenty minutes, depending on conditions, for example hot and strenuous- every ten minutes, cool and strenuous- fifteen minutes and so forth. You may ask, what is wrong in drinking juice, soda or beer when thirsty. The problem is, these drinks have to be digested first which slows down the absorbance process, resulting in a slower rate of hydration. This especially applies to children. Get them into the 'water' habit at an early age. Various diets can make you partially dehydrated, especially the high protein, low carb diets. You need plenty of water so your kidneys can cope with the extra protein. Extra water is also valuable for those poor souls who have a lazy colon. The fiber you are so diligently eating needs the water to make it swell so softening up the problem. Remember, if you are thirsty then you are all ready dehydrating, so before any work, exercise, or just sitting in the garden 'tank up' then 'top up'. Your energy levels will be higher and you will feel cooler. The bird is happy, the pooch is happy. Our guy is home now, once more in his recliner. He has yet to learn to exercise more but in his hand there is a bottle of water and his T-Shirt reads: "LIGHT WITH THE SO- DAS AND BEER. HEAVY WITH THE WATER?.
