Latinas Rule! Comically, That Is

BY LESLIE ANDREWS Photos Cathy Jardine for Desert Local News Four Latinas rocked the house at Spotlight 29 Casino with memorable humor and loads of laughs from the audience. It was all happening at the Latin Divas Of Comedy night. However, the show started off somber as a tribute video was played to honor one Marilyn Martinez, who was a Latin Divas cast member that passed away last year in December. Still, audiences were laughing at her jokes. Martinez joked about being overweight and about working as a phone sex operator. Then the magic happened when host Alex Reymundo took to the stage and introduced the four ladies, one at a time. Reymundo was also part of the act, as he joked about being an immigrant and about the common stereotypes of Hispanic Americans. "When I came to this country at the age of two, I learned two languages at a time,? he said. "My grandmother only learned how to curse in English.? One of the divas, Sandra Valls, came out, and literally has been out as a gay Latina woman. She picked on members of the audience, calling them "gay?, but still, those whom she picked on had a great time. "Isn't football the gayest sport around?? she asked. "Guys in tight pants grab the ball between each others' legs, and then they shower together after the game.? Then came Sara Contreras and Mo- nique Marvez. Both ladies were extremely funny and audience members nearly died laughing at both of their acts. After the show, all four of the divas and Reymundo got a chance to meet with the audience as they were leaving their seats to sign autographed copies of their DVDs. Local fans were blown away by the Divas and their performances. "I loved the show,? said Manny Anzeldua, from Coachella. "I enjoyed being picked on by them.? Patricia Gonzales of Thousand Palms loved the show so much she bought both DVDs. "I had a wonderful time,? she said. "It was a blast.?
