COACHELLA VALLEY LAW & ORDER
Correction of Public Safety Reporting
BY STAFF DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA. Inaccurate information was reported by former mayor (twice removed) Matt Weyuker writing for a Desert Hot Springs publication, the Valley Breeze. He writes "[Our] police department now numbers only 19 officers.? That is not correct. "We have authorized 28,? writes Commander Ed Smith of the Desert Hot Springs Police Department. "This includes the Chief and two Commander spots, with one open. We have six Sergeants, with one open. The rest are Detectives and Patrol Officers. We have one cadet and three CSO's, one administrative assistant and one civilian Supervisor that handles records,? adds Smith. Two officers start the Police Academy May 20th with BY VICKI LAWSON DHS, CA _A man was found dead early Sunday morning at his home by Sheriff's Deputies in the unincorporated area south of Desert Hot Springs. At approximately 1:04 a.m. that day, Deputies from the Palm Desert Station received an emergency call to a report of an unresponsive male adult one additional in the Academy. One's in the Field Training program with several more weeks to go. Five officer vacancies remain unfilled and that will increase with three now out on injury. One is a retiring Sergeant not returning. Over the years the DHS Police lost personnel due to budget cuts resulting from past city mismanagement and political decisions. Weyuker also mistakenly claims that the new Highway Patrol presence is "an expensive contract? crippling our police, preventing them from fighting "real crime.? "To clarify the confusion the CHP is not something we pay for. They are working on a State Grant and work FREE in the City and they are doing a fantastic job assisting us with traffic, education and in the 17500 block of Langley Road near Dillon Road. They arrived within minutes and located a deceased male at the above location. The preliminary investigation revealed that the decedent suffered trauma to his body consistent with that of a homicide. Investigators from the Sheriff's Central Homicide Unit (CHU) and Investigators from the Palm Desert Station gang suppression patrol,? writes Commander Smith. By delegating traffic issues to the CHP more DHS uniformed police officers are freed to fight real crime. Weyuker wastes plenty of ink stirring-up public frustration, erroneously demanding legislation or policies preventing parolees from living in Desert Hot Springs. Recent special meetings with Special Appointees from the Governor, The Chief of California Dept. of Parole, and many other law enforcement representatives at the respected DHS Public Safety Commission made it clear that the Constitution of the United States would have to be changed to make possible Weyuker's plan - and rightly so!
