Students Build A Legacy In Desert Hot Springs

BY KAITLIN RODRIGUEZ DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA- Twenty-five students from local high schools have something to be very proud of, which helped them shape their futures. And it's all made possible by Building Horizons. These kids all graduated from this program after completing the construction of a brand new home on 4th Street in Desert Hot Springs. They all received certificates along with a presentation from Mayor Yvonne Parks. "It's a great opportunity for the youth, and I know this group has potential,? said the Mayor. "This is an opportunity for kids who want to learn a trade, and it gives them pride and spirit.? And with that, they pro- vide homes to be purchased by low-to-moderate income families. Previously, these students have had to travel outside of Desert Hot Springs in order to participate in this program. But with this cityprovided land, this new home was made possible. Since 1994, 33 homes have been erected in the Coachella Valley by 540 students. Most of them have gone on to work in the local building industry or have continued to study in the field of construction at College of the Desert. These same programs also provide scholarships as well for their students. Nestor Diaz, a junior from Cathedral City High School adds, "This is a great program. It's a great opportunity to get a better job in the future.? According to Diane C. Williams, president of the board of directors, it is Building Horizons' extensive public-private sector support that makes the homes affordable. "The cities, the school districts, the local building and construction associations, local contractors, and even private donors all provide what they can,? said Williams. "The contribution of free or low-cost home sites, reduced fees, building materials, and construction labor all keep costs at a minimum so we can provide the homes as affordable housing.?
