ARTY AT CABOT'S

11 BY LESLIE ANDREWS DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA- Cabot's Pueblo Museum presented Cabot's Birthday Barbecue Bash again for the second year, this time with triple the attendance and many more times the fun. "We had beautiful weather and a beautiful crowd, and this is so far the biggest fundraiser in the history of Cabot's museum,? said Museum Director Michael O'Keefe. Saturday would have been Cabot Yerxa's 125th birthday, as he was the founder of the museum and the first person to home- stead land in what was to become Desert Hot Springs. The town celebrated his life in a big way, with special discounts off of everything at Cabot's Trading Post, a burro, representing Yerxa's faithful "Merry Christmas?, ice carving and the world premiere of "Cabot in Paris?, which featured paintings done by Yerxa himself when he spent time in France to study art back in 1925. The highlight of the event was the dinner, which was provided by Papa's Smokehouse BBQ of Morongo Valley. The meal consisted of ribs, chicken, beans, potato salad and garden salad. Of course, there was also dancing, a live auction as well as good old fashioned cowboy music by Tom Hiatt and Marvin O'Dell. All of the Desert Hot Springs City Council, including Mayor Yvonne Parks and City Manager Rick Daniels were all a part of this partying event. Police Chief Patrick Williams and Commander Ed Smith were also present. Coachella's own Mayor Pro Tem Steven Hernandez and County Supervisor Marion Ashley Photos by Max Liebermann for DLNews were there as well, having a great time. Preparing for the big event was not easy, as volunteers from the museum along with at least 20 students from Desert Hot Springs High School helped pitch in, led by teacher Melissa Giger and former DHS Mayor Alex Bias. "I feel that the volunteer program is the soul of the city. We gave a lot,? said Giger. Speaking of students, be prepared for the grand opening of Cabot Yerxa Elementary School, located nearby on Desert View Avenue in 2009.
